It is the oldest secondary school in Ottawa and possibly Ontario. It was named after a former Governor General of Canada. It was established in 1874 and has been formerly known as the Ottawa Collegiate Institute and the Dalhousie District Grammar School. It celebrated its 160th anniversary in 2004.
The Lisgar Alumni Association promotes and celebrates the traditions of Lisgar Collegiate Institute by assisting the former faculty and students in maintaining linkages with their past, with each other, and with the current faculty and students of the school.
