Richard Streit Hamilton (born 10 January 1943) is an American mathematician who serves as the Davies Professor of Mathematics at Columbia University. He is known for contributions to geometric analysis and partial differential equations.
I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943. My father was a surgeon; he had recently finished his residency at the Mayo Clinic when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. He volunteered as a naval surgeon in the war, and was stationed in Portsmouth, England during my first two years of life, repairing wounded pilots.
