Robert Alexy (born 9 September 1945 in Oldenburg, Germany) is a jurist and a legal philosopher. Alexy studied law and philosophy at the University of Göttingen. He received his J.D. in 1976 with the dissertation A Theory of Legal Argumentation, and he achieved his Habilitation in 1984 with a Theory of Constitutional Rights.

Robert Alexy, born in 1945, studied law and philosophy at the Georg-August-University in Göttingen. He wrote a dissertation entitled “A Theory of Legal Argumentation” (Theorie der juristischen Argumentation), published in 1978, for which he received the award of the Philologico-Historical Class of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen.
A. Alexy's Main Works—Overview. All of Alexy's work can be ordered along three main lines, addressing the theory of legal argumentation, the theory of constitutional rights, and the concept and the validity of law. He takes up these three lines in his three major treatises.
