Solomon was born in Jerusalem. He was the second child born to David and Bathsheba after their first child died as a baby. He was named Solomon (which means “peace”, since peace would reign in his day) by his mother, but Nathan the prophet named him Jedidiah (“Beloved of G‑d ”) at G‑d ’s behest. 1.
Solomon followed the model for ancient Near Eastern kingship, but it proved contrary to values that would become biblical theological foundations (see Deut 17 and 1Sam 8). Solomon notoriously oppressed his subjects through hard labor in order to build the temple and royal complex.
Solomon was not the oldest son of David, but David promised Bathsheba that Solomon would be the next king. When David’s elder son Adonijah declared himself king, David ordered his servants to bring Solomon to the Gihon spring where the priest anointed him while David was still alive.
