Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU or Toronto Met), formerly Ryerson University, is a public research university located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The university's core campus is situated within the Garden District , although it also operates facilities elsewhere in Toronto.
The university's Board of Governors approved the renaming in April 2022, following extensive community consultations and recommendations from the Standing Strong Task Force. The new name reflects the university's values, aspirations and location in Canada's biggest and most diverse city.

May 11, 2022 · Following a years-long process, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) announced its name change from Ryerson University in late April. The new name was unanimously approved by the institution’s board of governors and put into effect immediately.
Apr 26, 2022 · The downtown Toronto university announced the new name on Tuesday, following consultations with the school community and Indigenous groups. The name change reflects the school's location, diversity and values, and aims to address the legacy of Egerton Ryerson, who helped design the residential school system.
