Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1803, Sarah Helen Whitman (named Sarah Helen Power at birth) was the daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Marsh) Power. She was a poet, essayist, and critic noted for her sharp intellect, and she was remembered for her relationship with Poe. Poe met Whitman for the first time at her home in Providence on September 21, 1848.
