The Minamata Convention is a legally binding agreement to control mercury emissions, use and waste. It was adopted in 2013 and entered into force in 2017 with 147 parties and 154 focal points.

The fifth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention (COP-5) adopted 23 decisions to protect human health and the environment from mercury. The decisions include new phase-out dates for mercury-added products, a threshold for mercury waste, and a first effectiveness evaluation of the Convention.
