Gotham City ( / ˈɡɒθəm / GOTH-əm ), or simply Gotham, is a fictional city in the Eastern United States that serves as the primary city appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. It is best known as the home of the superhero, Batman, and his allies and foes.
Gotham City is the hometown of Batman and the Bat-Family. Though it first appeared in Detective Comics #27, it was first identified by Bill Finger in Batman #4 (Winter 1940). Often depicted to be on the East Seaboard of the United States, Gotham has changed depiction, including with the city geography and architecture.
