The Little Sisters of the Poor (French: Petites Sœurs des pauvres) is a Roman Catholic religious institute for women. It was founded by Jeanne Jugan . Having felt the need to care for the many impoverished elderly who lined the streets of French towns and cities, Jugan established the congregation to care for the elderly in 1839.
The little group of pious women began to take the form of a religious community, calling themselves the Servants of the Poor. Jeanne was elected superior. In 1844 the group changed their name to Sisters of the Poor to better reflect their desire to be sisters to the elderly in the Lord’s name.

Knocking on doors, she asked for money and gifts in kind – whatever was needed for her poor. She was recognized by the begging basket she carried. She believed that because God is our Father, all men and women are brothers and sisters – members of one family – and thus responsible for one another.
