Forecasts suggest tourists will spend €742.8bn euros in Europe in 2024, a rise of 14.3% on last year. Travellers’ expenditure on food and beverages is projected to surge by 30% compared to 2023, posing good prospects for providers of gastronomic experiences in Europe.
In 2019, Europe recorded 745 million international tourist arrivals. The pandemic caused international tourism to plummet in Europe, but the number has recovered to 595 million arrivals in 2022. Roughly 4 in 10 baby boomers state that Europe is their first choice for international travel.
In 2022, Spain was the most visited tourism destination in the EU for international tourists (people travelling outside their country), with 271 million nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments, or 22.4 % of the EU total (see Figure 5 and Figure 6).
Sep 27, 2023 · Eurostat data indicates that foreign tourists from the EU and extra-EU countries represented 43.0% of all nights spent in EU tourist accommodations in 2022. In 11 out of the 27 EU countries, the dominant flow consisted of foreign tourists.
Italy and Spain are the top foreign destination for EU residents in 2022. On average for the EU, 24.5 % of all trips were made in a foreign country: 18.8 % in another EU Member State and 5.8 % outside the EU (see Figure 1).
