Upon Sultan Mahmud’s death in Johor, the Sultan Muda was made ruler with the title Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah II.
Ketika Kesultanan Melayu Melaka jatuh akibat serangan Portugis pada tahun 1511, Sultan Mahmud Shah berundur ke Kampar, Riau, dan mangkat di sana dalam tahun 1528. Beliau mempunyai tiga putera yang bernama Raja Ali, Raja Muzaffar dan Raja Ahmad.
