History of Benwell Roman Temple. The fort at Benwell (Condercum) – one of 13 permanent forts along the line of Hadrian’s Wall – was occupied throughout most of the Roman period by the cavalry regiment ala I Asturum. It is no longer visible, its site covered on the north side by a Victorian reservoir and to the south by 1930s housing.
