St Mary Bishophill Junior, York is a Grade I listed [1] parish church in the Church of England, in the Bishophill area of York. [2] History. The church dates from the 10th century with the oldest part being the tower, which reuses some Roman stones.
History. The Virgin Mary to whom our church is dedicated, is honoured because of her relationship to Christ. And this honour, rather than taking away from that due to God, makes us more aware of God’s majesty; for it is precisely on account of the Son (Himself God) that she is venerated.

St Mary Bishophill is possibly the oldest church in York but it usually gets missed by most tourists and ignored by most travel guides. It is close to the city wall on Bishophill Junior between Smales' Street and Prospect Terrace.

St. Mary Bishophill Junior. Easter. It is generally agreed that St Mary Bishophill Junior is the oldest surviving church within the city walls. The church is situated within what was the colonia or civil quarter of the Roman garrison of Eboracum and pieces of Roman tilework can be observed found in the Tower.
