Rohatyn Jewish Heritage (RJH) develops and manages heritage preservation projects aimed at reconnecting the 400-year history of Rohatyn’s now-lost Jewish community with the people and places of the modern Ukrainian city.
During the first two years of WWII, Rohatyn along with much of southeastern Poland (former eastern Galicia, today western Ukraine) was occupied by Soviet military and administrative units, and life for Jews in the region was constrained but not mortally dangerous.
Known today as Rogatin, a major town in the Ukraine, Rohatyn is located 69 kilometers SE of L'viv at longitude 49° 25´ and latitude 24° 37´. From 1792 until 1919 it was in Galicia, a province of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire...then from 1919 until 1945 it was part of Poland .....and then it became part of the Ukraine.

In 1415, under Polish rule, it was granted the rights of Magdeburg law, and subsequently it developed into an important trading and manufacturing town.
