Jun 6, 2024 · A growing community. The City of Uvalde was founded by Reading Wood Black, a twenty-two year old from New Jersey. Black came to Texas in 1853 and purchased one league and one labor of land equaling 4,605 acres, on April 14, 1853. The land was located in Bexar County on the Leona River near Fort Inge.

1 day ago · Uvalde, city, seat (1856) of Uvalde county, southwestern Texas, U.S. It lies along the Leona River, some 85 miles (135 km) west-southwest of San Antonio. Fort Inge was built (1849) on the Leona’s east bank, and the site was settled in 1852 by W.W. Arnett, who was joined in 1853 by Reading W. Black.

Uvalde County (/ j uː ˈ v æ l d i / ⓘ yoo-VAL-dee; Spanish: Condado de Uvalde) is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 24,564. Its county seat is Uvalde. The county was created in 1850 and organized in 1856. It is named for Juan de Ugalde, the Spanish governor of Coahuila.
