George Dewey was born in Montpelier, Vermont, on the day after Christmas, 1837. His father Julius Yemans Dewey, was a graduate of the University of Vermont medical school, prominent local physician and founder of the National Life Insurance Company, a very profitable enterprise for which George's two older brothers, Charles and Edward, later served as president and vice-president, respectively.
