The star of stage and screen had his wife Alexandra and three daughters at his side when he died "peacefully" in hospital on Friday, said his management agency. Ward had appeared as Sir Monty in BBC legal drama Judge John Deed and as Bishop Gardiner in The Tudors.

He was 70. The star of both stage and screen died “peacefully” on Friday, with his wife Alexandra and three daughters at his side.
An experienced actor on stage and screen, Ward came to prominence playing Churchill in Richard Attenborough’s Young Winston (1972) with further roles in The Three Musketeers (1973), All Creatures Great & Small (1975) and Aces High (1976). On television he starred in Judge John Deed (2003-07) and The Tudors (2009-10).
