About Evelyn Waugh. Born in Hampstead in 1903, Waugh was the second son of Arthur Waugh, a prominent man of letters, and younger brother to Alec Waugh, the novelist. Educated at Lancing and at Hertford College, Oxford, Waugh came down with an undistinguished third in History.

In fact, his book “The Loom of Youth” (1917) a novel about his old boarding school Sherborne caused Evelyn to be expelled from there and placed at Lancing College.
