He has received critical acclaim for his films, which are often distinguished by their surrealist, dreamlike qualities. Lynch studied painting before he began making short films in the late 1960s.

Many of the “Lynchian” markers originate from Anger or Deren, but there are arguments to be made that Deren was not the sole author of her work, either, and Anger reused footage, as Lynch will, too.
