Apr 4, 2013 · 3. "Ask of someone" would tend to imply asking for something from someone, perhaps a favor. Whereas, "ask someone" simply means to ask someone something, like a question. Perhaps more clearly illustrated with "They are asking too much of him," vs *"They are asking him too much."

There is a definite difference between the two statements in tone, if nothing else, the first being a bit rude and presumputuous. Aug 13, 2018 · @J.J. The first is referring to the past, the second is referring to now. Things are complicated though, because you can't tell always from the tense used. "would have done" in grammars is called the conditional perfect or past conditional.
Aug 16, 2011 · 4. This meaning of ask (definition 7) is mentioned in the OALD: [transitive] to expect or demand something ... ask something of somebody You're asking too much of him. So, "doing everything you’re asking of it" means doing everything you expect or demand of it. That sense is derived by the use of the preposition of -- see your own example.
Let me add one possibility no one has mentioned: an appositive. Bill and Mark, they’re good chaps. Me, I’m thinking of staying. Me myself, I’m thinking of staying. Your father and me, we’re thinking of staying. My partners and me, we’re interested in investing in your product. All those are grammatical.
