I graduated from W&M im 2011. When I was a student, we all knew that William and Mary is a university. But no one--and I literally mean no one (student, faculty, admin) ever referred to the school as "the University." It was always "the College." I've noticed that official PR, marketing, and social media now exclusively uses the term university.
