Prior to entering politics, in 2010, he founded Gojek, Indonesia's first startup valued over US$10 billion. In October 2019, he was appointed as Minister of Education and Culture by President Joko Widodo on his second term's cabinet and subsequently resigned from his post at Gojek.

Gojek pertama kali ditubuhkan di Indonesia pada tahun 2010 sebagai pusat panggilan untuk menghubungkan pengguna dengan penghantaran kurier dan perkhidmatan ride-hailing beroda dua. Gojek melancarkan aplikasinya pada 2015 dengan hanya empat perkhidmatan: GoRide, GoSend, GoShop, dan GoFood.
Gojek didirikan oleh Nadiem Makarim, warga negara Indonesia lulusan Master of Business Administration dari Harvard Business School. Ide mendirikan Gojek muncul dari pengalaman pribadi Nadiem Makarim menggunakan transportasi ojek hampir setiap hari ke tempat kerjanya untuk menembus kemacetan di Jakarta.
