Painting. He studied painting when he was just 5 years old, taking an apprenticeship in his uncle Louis' studio. After trying to learn music, Cartier-Bresson was introduced to oil painting by his uncle Louis, a gifted painter and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1910.

His mother, Marthe, exposed him to the arts including taking him on trips to the Louvre in Paris, attending chamber music concerts, and regularly reading him poetry.

The son of a wealthy textile merchant, Henri Cartier-Bresson studied painting at André Lhote’s academy in Montparnasse in 1927, and soon thereafter entered the bohemian world of the Parisian avant-garde.
