Rrose Sélavy was the name of the alter ego of Marcel Duchamp, exponent of Dada and Surrealism.It was a symbol of the ideas of Dadaism when it included irony, play and puns. It appeared in photographs by Man Ray and in other works by Duchamp himself.

Constructed by a carpenter in accordance with Duchamp's instructions, Fresh Widow is a reduced scale version of the traditional floor-length French window. Duchamp covered the glass panes with panels of black leather, obstructing the metaphorical view through the window that is associated with illusionistic painting.
