Peter Darrell CBE ( né Skinner; 16 September 1929 – 2 December 1987) was an English ballet dancer, choreographer, and founder of the Scottish Ballet. For almost four decades Darrell was one of the most productive and imaginative talents in British ballet.
Among the young lions of new choreography who grew up in Britain’s post-war world it was Peter Darrell who emerged as the supreme master of narrative dance in classical ballet. Few have ever excelled his ability to tell story in movement, though the stories he chose to tell were not the usual ones.
Peter Darrell CBE, founder of the Scottish Ballet, was born at Richmond, Surrey, on September 16th, 1929 and died in Glasgow on December 2nd, 1987. He was 58, and for almost four decades had been one of the most productive and imaginative talents in British Ballet.
The Peter Darrell Trust was formed in 1994 to preserve and promote the works of the late Peter Darrell CBE, Founder director of Scottish Ballet. We are actively involved in the promotion of Peter's work worldwide, encouraging and assisting international companies to re-stage his ballets.

Dec 10, 2012 · On Sunday 2 December 2012, the Trust threw a party in Scottish Ballet’s splendid headquarters in Glasgow to celebrate Darrell, reunite former company members and screen a preview of a TV documentary about him: Peter Darrell – Scotland’s Dance Pioneer, transmitted on BBC2 Scotland (only) on 4 December.
Peter Darrell was the founder choreographer of Scottish Ballet. He was Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet from its founding in 1969 until his death in 1987. Committed to creating new work and showcasing emerging talent, he drew inspiration from tradition as well as the changing world around him.
