Volkmar Kleinert wurde 1938 in Dresden geboren. Nach Abschluss seines Schauspielstudiums an der Theaterhochschule Leipzig und zwei Jahren an der Eisenacher Landesbühne traf er am Chemnitzer Theater Wolfgang Heinz. Der holte Kleinert nach Berlin, als er Intendant des Deutschen Theaters wurde.
