He played college football at the University of Miami, where he earned consensus All-American and won the Heisman Trophy in 1986.

Vinny Testaverde was the first Heisman Trophy winner for the University of Miami in 1986, leading the Hurricanes to an undefeated regular season. He threw for 2,557 yards and 26 touchdowns, and was drafted first overall by Tampa Bay in 1987.
