Yoshifumi Kondô was born on 31 March 1950 in Niigata, Japan. He was a director, known for Princess Mononoke (1997), Whisper of the Heart (1995) and Only Yesterday (1991). He died on 21 January 1998 in Tokyo, Japan.
Kondo was expected to become one of the top directors at Studio Ghibli. However, he died of an aneurysm in 1998 at 47. His death is said to have been caused by work excess, and seems to be the main reason for Miyazaki's announcement of retirement in 1998.
