When vile aliens known as the Gamilons wreak nuclear havoc on Earth, a group of survivors refit the Japanese battleship Yamato for intergalactic travel and set off on a mission to retrieve a neutralizer that will eradicate the radiation from Earth's atmosphere.

To remove the radiations and to fight with the aliens on equal footing, humanity turns a WW2 japanese battleship (the Yamato) into a poweful space battleship and sends it into space to obtain a radiation removing machine from Sarsha, an alien woman living on the planet Iskandar.
For this task, the space battleship Yamato is launched from the remains of its World War II ancestor on a 148,000 light-year journey. However, the crew of the Yamato has only one Earth year to travel to Iscandar and back, or the human race will come to an end.
