The revenge of the forty-seven rōnin (四十七士, Shijūshichishi), [2] also known as the Akō incident (赤穂事件, Akō jiken) or Akō vendetta, is a historical event in Japan in which a band of rōnin (lordless samurai) avenged the death of their master on 31 January 1703. The temple is famous for its graveyard where the "47 Ronin " (also known as Akoroshi, the "masterless samurai from Ako") are buried. The story of the 47 loyal ronin ( see below) became highly popular as a kabuki play during the Edo Period (1603-1868) and remains very popular today.
