As "Last Summer" opens we are introduced to three affluent teenagers, two boys and a girl, who are spending the summer on Fire Island with their parents. Sandy, the girl, is more familiar and experienced with sex than the boys, or so she would have them believe. The two boys are, naturally, unsure of themselves.

The action takes place almost entirely on Fire Island, a long sandbar off Long Island with the Atlantic Ocean on one side, the Great South Bay on the other, and upper-class summer homes built on its beaches and dunes. The main characters spend school vacations on those beaches and in those homes.
Four teenagers on Fire Island experience the pains and pleasures of adolescence when they experiment with alcohol, drugs, and sex along the coast near a parent's summer home, resulting in tragedy when Rhoda, a misfit who wants to join them, is raped by the other three.
