Sir Joseph Cook GCMG (7 December 1860 – 30 July 1947) was an Australian politician who served as the sixth prime minister of Australia, from 1913 to 1914. He held office as the leader of the Liberal Party, having previously been leader of the Anti-Socialist Party from 1908 to 1909. [1]
When he became Australia’s sixth prime minister in 1913, he was the first prime minister to lead a Liberal party government. Cook was Prime Minister until September 1914 and later served as a minister in Billy Hughes’ Nationalist government.

Sir Joseph Cook (1860-1947), prime minister, was born on 7 December 1860 at Silverdale, Staffordshire, England, son of William Cooke, coalminer, and his wife Margaret, née Fletcher. He grew up in poverty.
Cook arrived in Australia in 1885 to join his brother-in-law to pursue mining prospects on offer in Lithgow, New South Wales. Cook soon became involved in union politics and in 1891 won the seat of Hartley in the New South Wales Parliament for Labour and became party leader in 1893.

Joseph Cook was Australia’s 6th Prime Minister, taking office in 1913 with a Liberal Party majority of only one seat in the House of Representatives. On leaving politics, Cook served as Australia’s third High Commissioner in London from 1921 to 1927.
