St Edmund Hall is one of the oldest undergraduate teaching institutions in the world, and nowadays also plays host to a vibrant and friendly community of around 300 graduate students.
The Hall takes its name from St Edmund of Abingdon, Archbishop of Canterbury (1234–40), who traditionally resided and taught in a house at the western end of the present front quadrangle when he was a Regent Master in the Arts, probably in the 1190s.

St Edmund Hall is one of the smallest of Oxford's colleges, and the only one to be named a 'Hall' rather than a 'College'. It was established as an Aularian house; a residential hall rather than a collegiate foundation. It only became a fully-fledged college in 1957.
