Esther Freud (born 2 May 1963) is a British novelist . Early life and training. Born in London, [1] Freud is the daughter of Bernardine Coverley and painter Lucian Freud. She is also a great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud and niece of Clement Freud.

Esther Freud trained as an actress before writing her first novel, Hideous Kinky, which was short listed for the John Llewellyn Rhys prize and made into a film starring Kate Winslet. After publishing her second novel, Peerless Flats, she was chosen as one of Granta’s Best Young British novelists.
In 1993, after the publication of her second novel, Peerless Flats, she was named by Granta as one of the Best of Young Novelists under 40. She has since written seven novels, including The Sea Hous. Esther Freud was born in London in 1963.
