The bolt body has three dimensions that are essential to any bolt size chart: bolt diameter and thread pitch. In standard bolt size charts, the thread pitch is the number of threads in one inch. In the metric system, it’s the distance between two threads in millimeters.
Length. The length of a metric bolt is measured in the same way as imperial, inch-based bolts and fasteners. Socket head, pan head, button head, and hex head bolts are measured from the underside of the bolt head to the end of the shaft.

Metric bolts are designated by the letter M. So a bolt with a 2mm diameter is 2M. The bolt size thus appears as 2M x .4 x 5mm.
