Tsar Nicholas II was the first cousin once-removed of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich. To distinguish between them, the Grand Duke was often known within the imperial family as "Nikolasha" and "Nicholas the Tall", while the Tsar was "Nicholas the Short".

Nicholas II of Russia (May 18, 1868 – July 17, 1918) (Russian: Никола́й II, Nikolay II) was the last tsar of Russia, the King of Poland, and Grand Duke of Finland. He ruled from 1894 until his forced abdication in 1917.
Nicholas II was an ill-prepared monarch. He knew little of foreign policy or politics and he took the stance that he would only do what his father would have approved of. He would safeguard the principles of autocracy, but he was not the strong leader that Russia needed to fulfil that.
