The Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI) also known as Institut Perubatan dan Pergigian Termaju (IPPT) was first established on October 16, 2002 upon the Cabinet decision to establish IPPT at Bertam, Kepala Batas, Penang under the governance of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
Central Research Laboratory IPPT. Central Research Laboratory (CRL), also known as Makmal Penyelidikan Berpusat (MPB), was established in April 2014. The establishment of CRL aligns with the ambition of AMDI Management towards better research facility management in enhancing research activity.

Professor Dr. Tunku Kamarul Zaman Tunku Zainol Abidin has been announced as the new Director of the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (IPPT). Seconded from University of Malaya (UM) for the next two years, Tunku Kamarul assumed office beginning 1 July 2021.
