rockyou.txt is a list of over 14 million plaintext passwords from the 2009 RockYou hack. Passwords from this wordlist are commonly used in CTF and penetration testing challenges. On default Kali Linux installations, the file is in the /usr/share/wordlists/ directory.
RockYou was a company that developed widgets for MySpace and implemented applications for various social networks and Facebook. Since 2014, it has engaged primarily in the purchases of rights to classic video games; it incorporates in-game ads and re-distributes the games.
Context Back in 2009, a company named RockYou was hacked. This wouldn't have been too much of a problem if they hadn't stored all of their passwords unencrypted, in plain text for an attacker to see. They downloaded a list of all the passwords and made it publically available.
8 Jun 2021 · CyberNews reports that RockYou2021, an homage to 2009's RockYou data breach, is an almost 100GB text file containing close to 8.4 billion (yes, billion) emails and passwords. The list presumably has been collected from several previous data breaches and hacks.
10 Jan 2022 · RockYou is junk unless you're combining it with a whole bunch of rules or just using it for CTFs. For real enterprise level cracking you want to use something much, much bigger and still in conjunction with a rule like Dive or OneRuleToRuleThemAll.
