Zojoji Temple (増上寺, Zōjōji) is the head temple of the Jodo sect of Japanese Buddhism in the Kanto Region. Standing next to Tokyo Tower, the temple grounds consist of some impressive structures as well as a mausoleum of the Tokugawa family and a small museum.

English|増上寺. HISTORY. Zojoji was founded in 1393 as an orthodox and fundamental nembutsu seminary for Jodo shu in the Kanto (east Japan) region. Zojoji was relocated to the present site in 1598 after Ieyasu Tokugawa, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, entered Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1590 to establish his provincial government.

Next to Tokyo Tower, Zojoji Temple houses figures of huge historical importance. The temple relocated to its present site in 1598 when the warlord and future leader of Japan, Tokugawa Ieyasu, stormed into Edo (now Tokyo).
Based on the Eiffel Tower in design, Tokyo Tower was completed in 1958. At 333 meters tall, it was the tallest freestanding tower in the world when it was built. It remained the tallest structure in Japan until being surpassed by Skytree in 2010.
