Jul 3, 2024 · Founding and early history. The first Pepsi-Cola was created by Caleb D. Bradham (1866–1934), a pharmacist in New Bern, North Carolina. Hoping to duplicate the recent success of Coca-Cola, Bradham named his sweet cola-flavored carbonated beverage Pepsi-Cola in 1898.
In 1932, Herman W. Lay began a potato chip business in Nashville, Tennessee. Soon after that, he purchased the manufacturer and formed H.W. Lay & Company. In 1961, the company merged with the Frito Company, becoming Frito-Lay Inc., and in 1965, Frito-Lay Inc. merged with Pepsi-Cola to form PepsiCo. Learn more +.

Pepsi, originally created in 1893 by Caleb Bradham and named "Brad's Drink," was first sold in his drugstore in New Bern, North Carolina. Renamed Pepsi-Cola in 1898 due to its supposed digestive benefits, it was shortened to Pepsi in 1961.
