May 11, 2022 · Following a years-long process, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) announced its name change from Ryerson University in late April. The new name was unanimously approved by the institution’s board of governors and put into effect immediately.
Overview. Founded in 1948, Ryerson University is a public research university that calls Ontario, Canada, home. Named after Egerton Ryerson, the institution started as the Ryerson Institute of Technology. It took on the name Ryerson Polytechnical Institute after its reorganisation in 1964.
