Founded in 1828 and carved out of the wilderness, it had by 1840 become a leading inland cotton port with a thriving textile industry utilizing power from falls in the river.

2. Columbus Museum. The Columbus Museum, one of the largest museums in the Southeast, tells Chattahoochee River Valley area history back to prehistoric times. We don’t think of Georgia as the west, but in colonial days it was the western frontier. The art is more than painting and sculptures. It ranges from Chihuly to crafted furniture.
