Contra Costa County (/ ˌ k ɒ n t r ə ˈ k ɒ s t ə / ⓘ; Contra Costa, Spanish for 'Opposite Coast') is a county located in the U.S. state of California, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Contra Costa County is home to more than one million residents, and was one of the original 27 counties established in California in 1850. Comprised of 19 cities and many established communities in the unincorporated area, it is the ninth most populous county in the state.

Lying across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, the East Bay consists primarily of Contra Costa County and Alameda County. It has a unique culture that's more laid back and uncomplicated than its western neighbors.
