Jan 18, 2013 · The ASIA Impairment Scale builds on the earlier Frankel scale but includes a number of significant improvements. AIS A (complete) classification is defined by the absence of motor and sensory function in the sacral segments S4-S5. An AIS-A classification is made with a single observation.
Incomplete injuries are graded as AIS B if there is sensory but no motor function below the injury level, AIS C if there is some motor sparing, AIS D for substantial motor sparing, and AIS E for normal neurological exam-ination (Fig. 1).
