Norbani Binti Ismail [norbani@iiu.edu.my] is assistant professor of the Qur’an and Sunnah studies at the International Islamic University Malaysia [IIUM], Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She teaches courses on sciences of the Qur’an, revelation as source of knowledge, and the biography of the Prophet Muhammad.
This paper explores Malaysia’s activist female preachers (pendakwah) by highlighting the religious authority and leadership in preaching that they have attained due to their firm grounding in Islam’s fundamental sources and Arabic.
