This subject is the first semester of four that forms an introduction to modern standard Chinese, commonly called Mandarin, the language with the largest number of native speakers in the world. It is the official language of Mainland China and Taiwan, and one of the official languages of Singapore.
The MIT-China Program combines student coursework on China and the Chinese language with hands-on applications in industry, research, and educational technology. Undergraduate and graduate students intern in companies and universities spanning mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

In August 2020, Dr Haohsiang Liao launched MITx: Chinese Language in Culture, Level 1, a novice-level MOOC course offered by Massachusetts Institute of Technology on edX. This is the first Chinese language MOOC offered by a north American university on edX as well as the first foreign language MOOC on MITx open to the broader public.
Tong Chen is a Lecturer in Chinese, teaching from introductory through advanced levels in the Regular language track, including regularly leading 21G.105 Chinese V (Regular): Discovering Chinese Cultures and Societies.
We have already taken the first steps toward building a center for learning about China at MIT and now teach courses in Chinese language, culture, history and politics.
