The Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC), located in Norfolk, Virginia, was established as the Armed Forces Staff College in 1946 and incorporated into the National Defense University in August 1981. The establishment of MAFDC was first mooted during the Malaysian Armed Forces Staff College (MAFSC) Board of Governors Meeting on 23 August 1978, on the need to have a military institution of higher learning in the country.
