The bonobo ( / bəˈnoʊboʊ, ˈbɒnəboʊ /; Pan paniscus ), also historically called the pygmy chimpanzee (less often the dwarf chimpanzee or gracile chimpanzee ), is an endangered great ape and one of the two species making up the genus Pan (the other being the common chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes ). [4]
Bonobos are usually a bit smaller, leaner, and darker than chimpanzees. Their society is also different—bonobo groups tend to be more peaceful and are led by females. They also maintain relationships and settle conflicts through sex.

The bonobo was regarded as a subspecies of chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) until 1933, although the two species diverged from each other about 1.7 million years ago.
Bonobos are peaceful, matriarchal great apes. Humans’ closest living relative, Pan paniscus is the least known great ape. They use social-sexual contact to resolve conflict. They live only in the Congo and are an endangered species mainly due to wildlife trafficking and the illegal pet trade.
Bonobos are one of the closest living relatives to humans, sharing DNA of more than 98%. They have profound intelligence and are complex beings with emotional expression and sensitivity. Compared to the competitive and male-dominated culture of the chimpanzee, bonobo society is matriarchal, peaceful, and more egalitarian.
What are bonobos? Our closest cousins, bonobos share 98.7 percent of our genetic makeup. They are about two-thirds the size of humans and are covered with dark hair. They are distinguished by their black faces, red lips, two or three webbed toes, a tail tuft, and parted long hair.
