But, apparently, nowadays it is widely used (check number of hits in a Google search), at least in the US, with the new form "petty is as petty does" to talk about small ...

  2. Jan 7, 2019 · Jan 7, 2019. #2. "Petty" has its usual meaning in this context of "of a narrow-minded, mean, or small-natured disposition or character" ( petty - WordReference.com Dictionary of English ). It could mean stingy (although I usually encounter it in Britain as being narrow-minded and/or preoccupied with unimportant things), but not greedy.

  3. Jan 13, 2019 · Petty bourgeoisie are people who are wealthier than the working class, but much poorer than the great bourgeoisie. According to Marxists, petty bourgeoisie admire the lifestyle of the great bourgeoisie, and look down upon the working class. I remember in post-Mao 1980s and 1990s, this term was still used by many to criticize a group of people who became well off and began to live a comfortable ...

  7. May 17, 2021 · The reason that we don't, or cannot, say most pretty is because someone, or some group of people, decided that we cannot. It's counterintuitive to not be able to say most pretty. The general rule, or pattern, is that with more than one syllable, we use more and most. And with one syllable we use er and est endings.

  9. Jan 28, 2018 · American English. Nov 23, 2018. #9. "Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things." The first part is another way of saying "Don't sweat the small stuff" (a rather well-known quote from the book DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF...and it's all small stuff). It means don't worry about and don't get all worked up about unimportant things.

  10. Apr 16, 2017 · English UK Southern Standard English. Apr 16, 2017. #3. Version (2) "I pity you" is the most idiomatic of the three, but as sdg implies (post #2), it can come across as condescending. Your original 'context' is probably the best way of putting it, I think: "I feel sorry for you".
