Right click on empty space and select Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices and see if the Microphone is listed. If you see the Microphone as a Disabled Device, right click on it and select Enable.

Here is how to reset the PC back to original defaults. On the login screen press and hold the shift key then right click the Power button at the lower right hand then click restart. It should restart the PC to Windows Recovery screen. Once you are in the Windows Recovery Screen go to Troubleshoot > Reset this PC. Reference Link.
